Geographic Distribution:

Arnica montana is Endemic to Europe, from southern Iberia to southern Scandinavia and the Carpathians. It is absent from the British Isles and the Italian and Balkan Peninsulas. A. montana grows in nutrient-poor siliceous meadows up to nearly 3,000 metres (9,800 ft). It is rare overall, but may be locally abundant. It is becoming rarer, particularly in the north of its distribution, largely due to increasingly intensive agriculture. In more upland regions, it may also be found on nutrient-poor moors and heaths.

The Asteraceae family is a large and spreadout family of vascular plants. It is one of the two largest flowering plant families in the world with 22,750 currently accepted species, across 1,620 genera and 12 subfamilies

Arnica is a Flower closely related to the Sunflower and shares many of its aesthetic characteristics. Arnicas is the plants Genus name and has about 30 perennial, herbaceous species. Several of the Arnica species such as Arnica chamissonis and Arnica Montana contain helenanin a sesquiterpene lactone, which has significant Anti-inflammatory proporties. Arnica is used by many Pro athletes and people seeking alternate forms of medicine. I personally have been using Arnica for years and it is a wonder drug. I was introduced to it by my girlfriend who had just had nose surgery and was utilizing Arnica to help reduce her facial swelling. After taking Arnica along with a healthy regiment of ice and ibuprofen her swelling was completely eradicated in a few days. I started using Arnica for sports injuries I received while playing rugby and found it to be extremely helpful. Its major uses are for any kind of soft tissue injury such as a ligament or tendon sprain or partial tear, it also helps significantly with contusions or bruising (a very common problem for rugby players).

Arnica can be administered in a few different ways all of wich I use because they have their own advantages depending on your injury:

1) Gel application: The Arnica has been isolated into a type of muscle rub that I use when I am rehabbing an injury. I find this method most effective directly after receiving an injury preferably after cold therapy (ice for twenty minutes followed by twenty minutes of compression then another twenty minutes of ice). The direct application of the Arnica to the area of injury helps to reduce the swelling and get rid of all of the scar tissue that forms around the injury.

Some Gels mix other topical analgesics such as camphor and menthol to help increase the blood flow the the affected area I use this kind of gel because I like to get the feeling of a muscle rub and get the therapeutic qualities of the Arnica.

2) Tablets Oral administration:

Arnica also comes in a small tablet form and is categorized as a homeopathic medicine, so it is more difficult to find. CVS and other mainstream pharmacies usually do not carry the tablet form of Arnica although I have found some of the Arnica gels at CVS. your best bet is to go to a GNC or Vitamin Shoppe a place that specifies in homeopathics. The Tablets are the real way to insure you have a good amount of the Arnica in your bloodtream, the Gels and rubs are great but I have found the tablets to absolutely necessary to feel the full effect of the treatment. After receiving the Injury one should add the suggested amount listed on the side of the bottle to regular sports injury treatment: RICE or Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation of the injury. The added benefit to Arnica has helped me cut down recovery time and also to curb the pain of nagging injuries such as ankle and knee sprains.
